Rocks, cacti, sunset and star trails - OH MY!

Details

Come along for a great day in Joshua Tree National Park

I will start by demonstrating your camera's functions of ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Mastering these concepts is important as your first step in becoming a creative photographer.

We will then move on to the concepts of visualization, composition, lens choice and the other elements that will help you to create beautiful images.

While shooting together I will also demonstrate how to shoot panoramas and HDR images.

We will be photographing in the afternoon followed by sunset at the cholla cactus field. For those that want to hang around until darkness (perhaps we will run into town for dinner and return) we will then head out again and photograph star trails over Joshua Trees! I have selected this date because there is a "new moon" which means the sky will be the darkest which will make for better star trails. To get the best start trails we have to be away from the light pollution from cities or the moon glow.

It will be a long day of photography and learning!

ADDED VALUE: This is a lot to cover while also allowing time for shooting images to practice so I am also including instructional video tutorials that I have created on these topics. Once you sign up I will send you the download links to these tutorials. HOURS of learning fun! Think of these as your homework!

Videos include:

  1. How your camera's meter evaluates exposure and how to interact with it to create the optimal exposures.

  2. How to read and use the camera's histogram to get perfect exposures every time.

  3. Elements of composition and other techniques to use to create beautiful images.

  4. Creating panoramas

  5. Using "HDR" to optimize your images without that cartoonish HDR look.

  6. Adding a sense of depth (third dimension) to your images.

  7. Image enhancement tricks

  8. Processing images in Adobe Lightroom

and more.

Lets have some fun shooting together!

I will try and arrange carpooling for those that are interested. We will ride out together and share the gas expense. If you are coming from Orange County you can meet us at Starbucks (5141 Warner Ave, HB) at 8AM and carpool. If that is not convenient we will meet you at the Oasis Visitor Center at 11AM.

Bring your cameras and tripods. Also bring a light jacket for the evening and plenty of water.

I will be happy to help you by answering any digital questions you may have.
