Speakers & Bios:
Stephanie Devine
Founder and CEO
THE VERY GOOD BRA
Stephanie Devine created the world’s first zero, post-production waste bra in the world via a Kickstarter campaign in 2018. From a corporate background, Stephanie became obsessed with creating non-wired bras made with natural fibres following a breast cancer diagnosis in 2006, and launched her first wire-free bra business in 2015. Learning more about the enormous impact the textile industry had on the environment caused her to stop and pivot in 2016. The simultaneous events in late 2016 of women burning their bras in the US following Donald Trump’s election, and hearing that the poor of India were dying in their dozens from burning toxic waste to keep warm in Delhi, made her determined to create bras that were botanically circular, and that left no impact at the end of their life.
The Very Good Bra is made of organic cotton or tencel and tree rubber elastic. It uses no spandex, nylon or polyester, and has been devoured in 8 weeks in a worm farm. It can also be home composted or just buried in soil. In September 2020, Stephanie was awarded the prestigious Best in Class Good Design Award for Fashion Impact. Based in Bondi, Steph spends time every morning at the beach, running, practicing gratitude, meditating, and picking up plastic!
Rebecca Percasky
Co-Founder
THE BETTER PACKAGING CO
With a microbiology degree under her belt Rebecca began her career working with multinationals (Vodafone, HP and IBM) to deliver complex tech implementations involving numerous moving parts including the management of people. As COO of StarShipIT, Australasia’s highest-rated eCommerce shipping software, she was responsible for partnering with courier companies and expanding its market penetration. Working so closely with the rapidly expanding eCommerce industry, Rebecca became cognisant about the growing repercussions of the amount of packaging waste being generated. When researching alternatives to plastic, Rebecca realised she could and was highly inspired to do packaging better. That was the genesis of her collaboration with Kate Bezar and The Better Packaging Co was born in March 2018.
Using the principles of the Circular Economy model The Better Packaging Co. has grown from start-up to the world’s premiere supplier of home compostable packaging for eCommerce.
