Waimanalo's Kanikapila Music Festival
Details
Bring your beach chair or blanket and join us for the most kicked back, local style music festival, celebrating slack key guitar and all varieties of Hawaiian styling.
We can have lunch together with all the great local grindz, or bring your own.
The festival starts at 9:00 and goes to
6 p.m. I'm planning to get there around 1:00.
Once I see who's coming we can make a plan on exactly where to meet up.
Here's what the flyer has to say about this festival:
"The Annual Waimānalo Kanikapila is a beloved community gathering that celebrates the legacy of Hawaiian music, culture, and ʻike through live performance and intergenerational connection. Held in the heart of Waimānalo, this free, family-friendly event brings together some of Hawaiʻi’s most respected musicians alongside emerging artists to share in the tradition of kanikapila—informal, collaborative music sessions rooted in aloha.
Honoring the enduring influence of slack key guitar (kī hōʻalu) and the musical heritage of the Pahinui ʻohana, the event serves as both a tribute and a living expression of Hawaiʻi’s rich cultural traditions. Attendees experience authentic Hawaiian music in its most natural form—played, shared, and passed down across generations.
The Waimānalo Kanikapila welcomes residents and visitors alike to enjoy a relaxed, outdoor setting where music, storytelling, and community come together. Guests can expect performances that blend traditional and contemporary Hawaiian sounds, creating a dynamic and heartfelt experience that reflects the spirit of the place and its people.
More than a concert, the event is a cultural gathering grounded in values of aloha, kuleana, and connection to ʻāina. It provides opportunities for youth and emerging musicians to learn directly from master practitioners, ensuring that these traditions continue to thrive.
Supported through community partnerships, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts, the Waimānalo Kanikapila stands as a powerful example of how music can unite people, preserve culture, and create meaningful experiences for all who attend.
Come join us, bring your ʻohana, and experience the music, the stories, and the aloha of Waimānalo."
