Hi my Fabulous Philly Friends!
Join me on my first event as a new organizer for our wonderful Meetup group. We will enjoy a scenic urban hike, starting and ending in Fishtown, with beautiful sweeping views of the Philly and Camden skylines, the bridge, a historic battleship, riverfronts, and much more. There will be several opportunities along the way for us to stop and admire the spectacular views, take photos, rest a bit and allow people to catch up. For those who are interested, we will end with delicious food and drinks at a local brewery.
The plan is to meet and start on Delaware Avenue next to the Rivers Casino parking lot, then make our way to the Ben Franklin Bridge, crossover to Camden and continue on to the USS New Jersey. From there, we will retrace our steps back across the bridge and head to Cherry Street Pier, Race Street Pier and Penn Treaty Park. Finally, we will be walking over to Other Half Brewing, just a couple blocks away, by around 1:00 PM.
Other Half Brewing is a relatively large place with both indoor and outdoor spaces, so we should be able to enjoy a relaxing end to our hike regardless of the weather… although I will cancel the hike in the event of severe weather.
This is a moderate level hike, and while it’s not difficult, with mostly flat terrain, it is close to seven miles, involves two bridge climes and will be at an average pace of between 3.0 and 3.5 mph (not fast, but not slow either… not a stroll!). Although we will try to not leave anyone behind, you should know your own fitness level/capabilities and be prepared to keep up.
For those who prefer a slightly shorter hike or fall behind, you will be able to omit a couple of the stops, such as Penn Treaty Park and the piers, to decrease the distance and/or catch up. We can figure this out when we meet. I may also skip stops if we fall behind schedule.
I look forward to seeing many old friends and acquaintances, as well as making many new ones. Hope you can join me.
Gear/food/drink, etc.
Sneakers are fine for this hike.
Be sure to check the weather and dress accordingly.
Bring plenty of water to hold you over, and some snacks and sunscreen, if you need them.
Parking
There are several options for parking nearby. You can park on the street within a few blocks of our meeting location, including just north of the casino near Penn Treaty Park, and Frankford Hall across from the casino and Columbus Boulevard. From previous hikes from this location, I’ve been advised that it’s not recommended to park at Penn Treaty Park.
There is also the Rivers Casino parking lot, where I have parked for previous hikes without a problem, in spite of the fact that there are signs stating that it’s casino parking only. If you decide to park there, please know that it’s at your own risk. Also, I advise you to park as close to our meeting location as possible.
Please be aware and read all parking signs, and be especially careful not to leave anything in your car in plain sight. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are not ticketed or towed, be safe, and protect your belongings.
Public Transportation
There are several buses and trolleys, as well as the Market Frankford Line that will take you to or near our meet up location. You should be able to figure it out using either the SEPTA app or one of the map apps.
