This month we will discuss identities we choose for ourselves, centered around the article linked below.
What to Expect/What to Bring
We plan to meet in the backyard, weather permitting. As usual, we will socialize for an hour before the discussion begins at 8:30. We will wrap up around 10:30 and then share what each group discussed.
Feel free to bring food to share!
Discussion Questions/Ideas:
- When are identities we choose for ourselves harmful?
- How committed must one be to an identity?
- How do we form identities of out-groups?
- Have you ever held an identity, where others in the group didn't think you belonged?
- Has fear of commitment to an identity ever held you back? For example: "Only X people do Z" (even though Z by itself doesn't bother you).
- Does accepting a mental health diagnosis, such as being on the autism spectrum, lead to self-acceptance and better self-understanding? Or does it lead to limitations?
