Curious about 3D printing but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly workshop is designed to give you a clear, practical introduction to how 3D printers work—and how to use them successfully in a makerspace environment.
We’ll demystify the entire process, from digital design to finished print, while sharing real-world tips that help you avoid common mistakes and wasted material.

### What You’ll Learn

  • How FDM (filament) 3D printers work
  • The main parts of a 3D printer and what they do
  • Common materials (PLA, PETG, etc.) and when to use them
  • How slicing software turns a 3D model into printer instructions
  • Key settings that affect print quality, strength, and time
  • How to load filament and prepare a printer for a print
  • Typical failure modes—and how to spot and fix them early

### What We’ll Do

  • Walk through a real print from digital file to manufactured part
  • Watch a print begin and learn what “good” first layers look like
  • Examine finished prints and failed prints to understand why results differ

### Who This Workshop Is For

  • Beginners with little or no 3D printing experience
  • Makers who have used a printer but want a stronger foundation
  • Makerspace members looking to gain access to the 3D printers.
  • No prior experience is required. You don’t need to know CAD.
  • Bring a laptop with Bambu Studio installed. Download it for free here.
  • If you don't have a laptop, you can still attend. We a have a few to share.
  • Don't forget to bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn.

### What You’ll Leave With

By the end of the workshop, you’ll understand how 3D printing actually works, what settings matter (and which don’t), and how to approach your first prints with confidence in a shared makerspace.
You'll also leave with your very own 3D printed object.

### Age Requirements

  • This workshop is recommended for ages 14 and up
  • Participants under 14 must attend with a parent or guardian
  • Makerspace membership is available to individuals 18+
