What does it mean to be a self?

What does it mean to be yourself?

Is the self an illusion? A helpful fiction of subjective existence?

Is the self a harmful fiction? Something to be overcome and reintegrated into a larger unity?

Is the self something that continues? What would the continuity include? Is it possible to grow up as selves into the likeness of an ideal person (Jesus) while still remaining uniquely yourself?
