About us
Absolutely. Iโd keep the same visual rhythm as the event page, but make the main group description a little richer and more substantial.
## Fancy a Chat?
๐ฟ People, not patients
Fancy a Chat? is a small, peer-led social group in Brighton & Hove for people whose long-term physical health problems, chronic pain, disability or major health issues have disrupted their social life and left them feeling increasingly isolated.
The group is aimed mainly at people in their 40s, 50s give or take a few years, who would like some regular, easy-going social contact with people in broadly similar circumstances.
๐ฌ Why this exists
Fancy a Chat? was born out of frustration.
After years of living with serious health problems and moving through appointments, scans, treatment, hospitals and support services, one thing became increasingly clear to me:
The system is often very good at treating people as patients, but much less good at helping them feel part of ordinary life again.
Long-term pain and illness do not only affect physical health.
Over time they can shrink your world.
Friendships change. Confidence can drop. Plans disappear. You can begin to feel more like a case being managed than a person living a life.
๐งฉ What often gets missed
A lot of well-meaning attempts to address isolation can miss the mark.
They add an activity, a programme, a facilitator, a referral pathway or another layer of structure.
Sometimes what is missing is much simpler:
Normality.
Company.
Familiar faces.
Somewhere ordinary to go.
Someone who understands without needing an explanation.
That is what this group is trying to create.
โ What happens when we meet
We meet face-to-face in a relaxed, ordinary social setting for conversation, company and human connection with people who understand how much long-term health problems can change everyday life.
You can talk, listen, have a cup of tea or coffee, have a laugh, have a moan, or simply enjoy being around other people for a while.
There is no pressure to explain yourself.
There is no pressure to talk about your health.
There is no expectation to perform, participate in an activity, or be anything other than be yourself.
๐ซ What this is not
This is not therapy in the typical sence.
This is not counselling.
This is not dating.
This is not a general loneliness group.
This is not an exercise or activity group.
There is no pressure to talk about diagnoses,
You will not have to label yourselfs as someone with a life long illnessm. its'symptoms, treatment or pain levels unless you want to.
๐ซถ The point
Years in the system can strip away what once felt normal. Companionship can help put some of that normality back.
The aim is to create a friendly, low-pressure place where people can get to know one another naturally and gradually rebuild some social connection.
๐ How often
Meetings will be small and usually held on a weekday morning in Brighton & Hove.
They will probably be fortnightly or monthly depending on interest and what works best for the people who come along.
๐ฑ A first step
This will be my first time hosting something like this.
Iโm starting it because I couldnโt find quite the kind of group I was looking for myself, so I decided to give it a go.
There may only be a few of us at the first meeting, and that is absolutely fine.
If the idea appeals to you, come along, see how it feels, and help shape what it becomes.
Just people meeting people.
