We will be reading Katabasis by the author who wrote Babel & The Poppy War. Katabasis is a 2025 dark academia fantasy novel by R. F. Kuang about two rival Cambridge PhD students, Alice Law and Peter Murdoch, who journey into Hell to rescue the soul of their recently deceased professor, Jacob Grimes. The novel explores themes of academic ambition, rivalry, and the harsh realities of academia, using the mythological concept of a "katabasis" (a descent into the underworld) as a metaphor for the characters' experiences.
