About Farmer and Queen
Seymour Farmer and John Queen were two figures both involved in labour politics in the first half of the 20th century.
Seymour Farmer served as Mayor of Winnipeg from 1923-1924. He was active in labour activism and founded or was involved with various political groups. Alongside his friend, Fred Dixon, he was also an advocate of Henry George's idea of a land value tax.
John Queen served as Mayor of Winnipeg from 1938-1942. He was a colleague of farmer in early 20th century labour politics. His mayoralty saw an expansion in funding of public services.
About the Reading Group
This Winnipeg-based reading group will read and discuss books on the political economy of land and urban affairs. We'll try to see if any of this helps illuminate or put in a new light current events and developments. The first book will be Henry George's Progress and Poverty, others will be considered after that.
