Event Description:
Vivaldi’s Gloria in D major, RV 589
Sunday, December 14, 2025 – 11 a.m. Worship
Presented in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church
The Celebration Choir, joined by community friends, will offer Vivaldi’s Gloria during the second Sunday of Advent. The choir will be accompanied by a string ensemble featuring trumpet, oboe, and bassoon.
About Vivaldi’s Gloria:
This joyful work reflects the angelic proclamation from the Gospel of Luke: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of goodwill.”
Originally composed for the all-female chorus of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice—where Vivaldi taught strings—the piece includes twelve movements, each with its own character. Four movements feature soloists, either individually or in combination.
Vivaldi scored the work for SATB so it could be performed outside the cloister, but the music disappeared after his death. Rediscovered in the late 1920s, Gloria has since become a beloved staple of the Christmas season.
Featured Soloists:
Jennifer McFadyen Hammond, soprano
Vicki Hogan, soprano
Joyce Borum, soprano
Evelyn McCauley, alto
Join us as we celebrate the season with this “Angel’s Song” on Sunday, December 14, during 11 a.m. worship. All are welcome.
