ALIVE! Food Unloading

Details
The Alexandria Jaycees are affiliated with ALIVE! to offer assistance in their programs to help the less fortunate in our community. ALIVE! is an acronym for ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically; it is a group of approximately 40 congregations in Alexandria. The Last Saturday Food Distribution is one of seven programs run by ALIVE!, which is the largest social safety net in the city. ALIVE! serves all in the community regardless of their religious affiliation. On the last Saturday of every month, ALIVE! has groups of volunteers process food “orders” for needy families and individuals in our community. The volunteers sort and bag food; then hand it out to the clients. The Jaycees have been involved with this project for years and help out on the evening before the event in unloading the truck of food received from the food bank. The Jaycees volunteer at the Cora Kelly Recreation Center (3600 Commonwealth Avenue) in Del Ray at 6:30 pm on the Friday before every “last Saturday” food distribution in this way. It takes about 1 hour and afterward, we offer volunteers the chance to go out for dinner for some fellowship. We do this on a monthly basis and ALIVE! is very appreciative of this offer of assistance.
