Unleashing the multi-cluster potential with Liqo
Details
## What is CNCF? (Cos'é CNCF?)
CNCF is a branch of The Linux Foundation focused on Cloud Computing and modern scalable architectures. it's supporting tools like Kubernetes, Prometheus, containerd and so on. If you are using one of them or you are looking to know more about them, this is your meetup.
## About the event
Kubernetes is becoming every day more and more pervasive: the number of Kubernetes clusters in each organization tend to proliferate, for different reasons, e.g., (multi-provider cost-optimization strategies, multi-region strategies due geographical law and latency constraints, scalability). However, this multitude of clusters cannot easily and consistently be managed from a single point of control. In fact, existing multi-cluster approaches have important limitations. For example, Kubefed v2 requires devops to deal with new sets API for pod placement, forcing people to operate with different paradigms and commands compared to a vanilla K8s cluster; others rely on statically cluster-allocated pods (i.e. GitOps) or have strict requirements on the clusters setup (i.e. CNIs, pod CIDR) to establish multi-cluster interconnections.
In this talk, Alex and Fulvio will discuss the current multi-clusters landscape and present Liqo (https://liqo.io) a recent project baked by folks at Politecnico di Torino, built to dynamically handle the multi-cluster complexity, enabling seamless migration of pods among different clusters. This talk will:
-
Compare existing solutions for multi-cluster, highlighting use-cases and limitations. In particular, we will discuss the potential of a k8s-like multi-cluster control plane.
-
Present the Liqo project and its “big cluster” abstraction, obtained by transparently aggregating multiple existing clusters.
-
Show how Liqo can be easily used to perform a “cloud burst”: seamlessly scaling the capacity of an on-premise cluster using a managed cluster, in a matter of minutes.
# About the authors
Alex Palesandro, PhD is a Research Assistant at Dept. of Control and Computer Engineering, Politecnico di Torino, Italy. In the past, he worked as a R/D engineer at Orange Labs specializing in multi-cloud technologies. After that, he spent several years as consultant to foster adoption of automation, containers and Kubernetes. His research interests include cooperative multi-cloud systems, edge/fog computing and network function virtualization.
Prof. Fulvio Risso is Associate Professor at Dept. of Control and Computer Engineering, Politecnico di Torino, Italy. His research interests focus on service orchestration and high-speed network processing; he co-authored 130+ papers in his area of expertise. He started and leaded several open-source projects including WinPcap, the de-facto library for packet capture on Windows for many years, NetBee, a powerful library for flexible packet processing, FROG, a multi-domain SDN/NFV/cloud orchestrator and the recent CrownLabs, Polycube and Liqo initiatives. Within his 20+ years of experience, he established strong industrial collaborations with Cisco, Vmware, Huawei, HPLabs, TIM.
