How I discovered Mirate for the very first time
After a night out at Figaro Bistrot a few years ago while walking to my car I stumbled upon a very beautiful arched gated door entrance on the sidewalk. Outside on the wall it said Mírate and an ancient artistic Aztec face image hung on a flag. The word Mírate translates to English “Look at you.” I was immediately curious and knew this was going to be an upscale Mexican restaurant. The black door past the ornate iron gate was open. Before me was a very long dimly lit flight of stairs the kind you would find at a speakeasy. But what I didn’t realize is what I was about to see next.
Once I reached the top I found myself in a hidden labyrinth of a Mexican restaurant that resembles a luxurious, multi-story treehouse. The sheer size of the place is so impressive, you’ll find yourself lost searching for a bathroom among numerous passage-ways. This Tulum-esque ambiance, romantic candlelight glow, and lush vegetation transports you to a colorful dream of a restaurant treehouse.
MÍRATE
Owned by Matthew Egan, Mirate offers a versatile dining experience in a beautifully restored 1920s building, 7,500-square-foot space spanning three floors with two bars, and mezcaleria lounge celebrating Mexican spirits, wines and beer. The restaurant’s retractable roof provides an open-air view of Griffith Observatory, while a massive tree that sprouts from the ground floor remains a fixture.
MENU
https://www.mirate.la/comida
Guests will explore an ingredient-driven menu inspired by Mexico’s bold flavors in a lively setting artfully combining the kitchen’s whimsical takes on nuanced techniques. The menu is intended to be shared with dishes that present familiar flavors in a new, unexpected way that emphasizes the layered culinary history of Mexico, seamlessly intertwined with California cuisine.
From there, prioritize Mírate's tacos arabes, which come on buttery flour tortillas and are filled with a choice of oyster mushrooms in nutty sesame salsa, smoky octopus, or tender, fatty beef tongue in a sweet, tangy tomato-nopal vinaigrette. The rest of the menu is dressed-up Mexican staples that are a unique blend of layered flavors from Mexico and California.

THE DRESDEN (no cover 2 drink minimum)
The third Friday of the month has fun entertaining artists.
A popular filming location and celebrity hangout, the Dresden features strong cocktails and live entertainment in a classic old Hollywood environment since 1954. In many ways, the Dresden is that perfect old Hollywood lounge.
Little has changed since it was remodeled in the ‘60s. The décor there is stylish retro. Grab a seat at the bar if you arrive early or sink into one of the brown leather semi-circular booths along the perimeter against the faux rock walls and wood paneling. Seating can also be found surrounding the piano. The Blood and Sand, a blended rum-based drink, is the signature cocktail.
The Dresden has been used in the films “What Women Want” (2000), with Mel Gibson, “The Two Jakes” (1990), with Jack Nicholson, “That Thing You Do” (1996), and “Anchorman” (2004). Nothing, however, had more of an impact on Ferraro’s business than “Swingers” (1996). In it, two aspiring actors, played by Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, often meet at the Dresden to commiserate over cocktails.
