1st Session: (8 – 9:30)

Andrea Myers-Whooper has 20 years in health care reimbursement, 7 of those were reimbursement, coding and billing manager, 7 years teaching medical billing and coding, 5 years as an independent consultant, owning and operating her own health care billing service. She has worked at various health care facilities here in Memphis (LeBonheur Children's Medical Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Accredo/Nova Factor Pharmaceuticals, UT Medical Group, a non-profit multispecialty community health clinic) and several specialties in private practice as the billing manager. She attended the University of Phoenix, field of study: Bachelor of Science in Health care Admin.

Topic and Outline:

Introduction to Medical Terminology:

The fundamental word elements used to build medical terms. The meaning of selected prefixes that pertain to position or placement, numbers and amounts, and those that is descriptive and used in general. The meaning of selected word elements that pertain to weights and measures. The meaning of selected suffixes that pertain to pathologic conditions, those used in diagnostic and surgical procedures, and those that are used in general. Guidelines that will assist you with the identification and spelling of medical words. The meaning of selected word elements that pertain to color. Review 2nd session: (9:30 – 11:00)

Mary Ann Lucas has long been a fixture in the Memphis & Mid-South healthcare management community, having taken her 1st position in the field in 1975.

In that time she has frequently led seminars and given presentations to medical societies, physicians groups, national healthcare consultants associations, and professional academies such as the Memphis chapter of the AAPC. She has addressed all levels of the healthcare community – from physicians, mid-level practitioners, facility providers, and professional consultants to students and clinic employees – on topics as varied as coding, auditing, Affordable Care Act provisions, healthcare practice regulations & challenges, ICD-10, practice risk management, human resources law, and quality of life.

Her background has been gleaned from both formal education and on-the-job experience. She holds a BS in Mathematics and did her master’s work in Sociology and Statistics. She has worked for both the federal government and the State of Tennessee and for health care providers, a major health insurer, a regional healthcare management firm, and as a private consultant. Her specialty repertoire includes primary care, internal medicine, endocrinology, ENT, dermatology, neurology, rheumatology, cardiology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, psychology, podiatry, physical therapy, chiropractic, home health, skill nursing, and hospice care.
