Walk Among the Shadows - The Bombardment of Falmouth, 1775: The 250th Anniversary of Maine’s Baptism by Fire
An evening tour of Portland's Eastern Cemetery complete with "living" spirits who will recount their stories.
On October 18, 1775, on the eve of the War of Independence, Captain Mowatt of HMS Canceau was ordered by Admiral Graves to bombard Falmouth (now Portland), and burn the town to ashes.
The Battle of Lexington forced Mainers to openly choose sides. Tories, Rebels, tavern-keepers, farmers, laborers: all were scorched by the conflict. On October 18, the illusion of safety and neutrality was forever burned away.
On the 250th anniversary of this catastrophic event, you will hear from participants, witnesses, and victims about the events leading up to, and including, the tragic destruction of Falmouth.
Donations are suggested. Find a series of frequently-asked questions or reserve your space on Eventbrite! If Eventbrite says the night is sold out, you can pay in cash at the gate.
