Obed Gorge Adventure Hike — Lilly Bluff to River
Details
## Date & Time
Sunday, May 3
Trailhead Arrival: 8:20–8:30 AM
Step-off: 8:30 AM sharp
## Overview
Join us for a scenic and moderately challenging adventure hike at Obed Wild and Scenic River.
We’ll start at Lilly Bluff Overlook, descend into the gorge, and follow the river corridor to a natural turnaround point. We’ll take a break near the river for snacks or a light lunch, then return the same way—finishing with a steady climb back out.
This is a great opportunity to experience one of East Tennessee’s hidden gems while building endurance, resilience, and connection with a strong group.
This is not a race. We’ll move at a steady, supportive pace with regroup points along the way.
## Distance & Difficulty
- Distance: ~5.5 to 7 miles round trip
- Total gain: ~900 to 1,200 feet round trip
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Terrain: Dirt, rock, roots, elevation change
Expect:
- a steady descent early
- a sustained climb on the return
## Optional Carpool (Recommended)
We’ll offer a carpool option from Clinton for those who want to ride together.
Meet at:
Walmart Supercenter
150 Tanner Ln, Clinton, TN 37716
- Depart: 7:15 AM sharp
👉 Please arrive early if you plan to:
- use the restroom
- grab coffee or snacks
There is a Dunkin’ inside the Walmart, along with several fast food options nearby within a short distance.
Google Maps shows approximately 1 hour 5–10 minutes to the trailhead.
## Why We’re Starting Early
We’re starting earlier for two key reasons:
- Parking is limited at Lilly Bluff, and the lot can fill up quickly on weekends
- Cooler temperatures — an early start helps us stay ahead of the heat and makes for a more comfortable hike
Arriving on time is important for both logistics and group flow.
## What to Bring
- Day hiking backpack
- 2–3 liters of water (required)
- Snacks / light lunch
- Sturdy footwear (rocks + roots)
- Basic personal first aid kit
- Sunscreen
- Appropriate clothing for conditions
- Extra layer (weather can change in the gorge)
- Bug spray (seasonal)
- Trekking poles (optional but highly recommended)
👉 We strongly encourage bringing the 10 Essentials for safety and preparedness.
## Safety & Participation
Participants are responsible for their own gear, pacing, decisions, and safety.
By attending, you acknowledge and accept the inherent risks of outdoor activities.
Please review the Fierce Planet Adventures Safety & Terms of Participation prior to attending.
## What This Is (and Isn’t)
This is:
- a solid effort hike
- a chance to challenge yourself
- time outside with a supportive group
This is not:
- a fast-paced race
- a casual stroll
If you’re willing to try, you’ll be fine.
## Final Word
You don’t need to be the fastest or strongest to be here.
Show up ready to move, stay open to the challenge, and be part of the group.
Live Fiercely.
