GPO HERITAGE TOUR - Free Event

Details
Take a night tour to discover the rich history of the former Sydney General Post Office building.
The Sydney General Post Office (GPO) was constructed in two stages, beginning in 1866 and designed under the guidance of colonial architect James Barnet. It was regarded as a building that would come to symbolise Sydney in the same way the Houses of Parliament in Westminster represents London and the Eiffel Tower represents Paris.
The first stage of the GPO was opened in 1874, and not long became an institution. In 1891, the clock tower was completed and the bells rang out across Sydney for the first time.
Being the true centre of the city centre and with the tank stream running beneath the sandstone foundations this tour will take you back to the 1800s and transform you to the importance of the “International Mail Day” which is a social event not to be missed and was deemed a FOMO event on the social calendar back in the days.
All the historical significance of all the intricacies that the architects have implemented will be explained. You will never look at this building the same again.
Tour will finish 7:30pm and we can have a quick bite nearby.
