Ranelagh Arts is very happy to welcome you to our first screening in a series of classic films. We are showing a selection of noteworthy movies that have entered the public domain.

Our first film is 'Meet John Doe' (1941)

Meet John Doe is a 1941 American comedy drama film directed and produced by Frank Capra, written by Robert Riskin, and starring Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward Arnold. The film is about a "grassroots" political campaign created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist with the involvement of a hired homeless man and pursued by the paper's wealthy owner.

What begins as a lie to sell papers, develops into an idea that grips a national audience. The good intent of the message becomes compromised by those who wish to control it, revealing the power behind our media. This topic is very relevant even today, as fiction is often played as fact to attract and influence the general viewer.

Let's layout the steps of the event:

We will arrive at the Ranelagh Arts Centre at 8pm, where we will have a meet and greet.

Then we will introduce the film, giving context to the film and also detailing the significance of the work.

After that, we will promptly screen the film.

When the film has ended, we will provide time to discuss and reflect on the viewing. All opinions and topics of discussion are welcome.

After our discussion, we will come to the end of our event.

Details:

• You are free to bring snacks, drinks and alcohol (in moderation). Make sure to keep the area clean during and at the end of the event.
• There is a toilet available.
• The event is free, but donations towards the running of the centre are welcome (Suggested donation: 5 euro)
• It is a shared viewing, so any noise will not be allowed during the film
• 18 and older event
