A table read is an organised reading of a screenplay in which the speaking parts, stage directions and scene headings are read out loud. They are an essential part of the script development and writing process, as writers use them as an opportunity to fine tune their stories, sharpen their dialogue, and make other necessary adjustments.

The parts are usually read by actors and provide an opportunity to practice the acting craft, including reading and interpreting text. As they are often done with little preparation, they also great audition practice.

At this free community event, participants will meet emerging screenwriters and aspiring actors and filmmakers. Participants will be randomly assigned a table and a screenwriter and, in small groups (6-8 people) will read their scripts out loud around the table. You will be invited to (respectfully) provide feedback and offer ideas to improve their work. Afterwards, a 10-15 minute excerpt from each screenplay will be read by participants in front of the entire group.

Participants will also enjoy a light lunch and refreshments.

If you have ever considered being an actor or a filmmaker, this is a great opportunity to participate in the creative process for a movie. No experience necessary, just an ability to read. An interest in acting and/or filmmaking is definitely encouraged.

This event is brought to you through a City of Melbourne grant.

Please note: some of the sessions will be recorded so that writers can refer back at a later date. The footage may also be used for future promotional purposes. By registering you permit the recording of your attendance and participation, but please let the organisers know if you do not wish this to be the case.
