Geometry. Abstract Light Sculpting in Fine Art Photography

Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday Season in our beautiful rainy Vancouver :)
I'm back in town for Christmas and will be here until Jan 8th. I will be offering a variety of workshops for the first weekend of January before I leave again.
Exactly a year ago I visited "Lee Miller and Man Ray" exhibit in Venice, and that started a whole cycle of research in photography on "who influenced who and how". I also got into making clay sculptures last summer and this also played a role in development of this theme in my head.
My inspiration for this workshop piled up from seeing the works of Man Ray, George Mayer, Horst P. Horst, and Marcus Schaefer.
I've been wanting to do this event for a long time and because this might be the most complex theme technically out of the ones we've done, I was intimidated to try this in a group setting.
But after doing some tests myself, I think it will be great! I will have an assistant present as well.
This type of photography is not everybody's cup of tea, it's very calculated, requires a lot of intention behind every image. So please only sign up if this speaks to you.
It's also longer than our regular events, to allow some extra thinking time.
(There will be another workshop for Jan 7th which is more dynamic and easy going, more like my earlier events)
THE THEME:
This is definitely a "winter theme" lighting wise.
Emotive, obscured, life and death sort of a thing. Dramatic.
When we did George Hurrell workshop I realized the importance of shapes in the background. Looking at the works of Horst P. Horst, Man Ray, George Hurrell, it's the shapes in the background that add all the depth and context to a subject.
For this workshop we will need to focus on that as much as on the light for the main subject.
That can be achieved with lighting, or geometric shapes. Both will be provided.
I like how in this theme of geometry, shapes and light the actual personality of a photographer comes out. This can be surreal and dreamy and serious, or very architectural and calculated.
With the works of Marcus Schaefer - its absolutely groundbreaking. It embodies the whole knowledge of classical fine art photography of the last century but presented through a modern lens. You can see his experience with sculpture in the way he sculpts the light in his photography. If we could touch that even a little bit, I will be beyond happy.
ART DIRECTION:
Here is a folder with the photos we can use as references for this.
The folder is editable by anyone with a link. Please feel free to add any other images that inspire you prior to the shoot.
The plan is to do both full body and portraiture.
The wardrobe will be elegant and whatever is good for silhouette, probably a mix of eras.
LIGHTING:
We will use continuous LED lights.
- 3 lights with optical snoot kits and gobos + lenses to create shapes.
- 2-3 geometric shapes to use as a background.
THE FORMAT:
For this session I'd like it to feel almost like a private shoot, that's why its longer. This will allow a slower pace since this concept requires a lot of attention to detail and precision.
Level of experience.
intermediate - advanced. You need to understand the lighting, composition, have attention to details and be comfortable with post processing.
LOCATION:
I've booked a loft studio for this shoot as it requires space for all the lights. I'll send a message to participants with the address.
Please send me a text/message once you are there and I'll come meet you at the front.
