On February 7, 2019 Charlotte and the Banking Industry woke up to the announcement that a new bank would be forming and headquartered in Charlotte. Not the overnight rise of a Challenger Bank, but a throwback to banking days of old: M&A. For the banking industry, it was the biggest announcement in over a decade for an industry where M&A had been the norm prior to the financial crisis. For Charlotte, it was the windfall of the year -- a chance to relive glory days as Banktown, USA. Suddenly, the staid industry of retail banking was hip again.

But the world is different this time. Technology is an integral part of daily banking -- "Fintech" is the new branch, and digital innovation and technology platforms were named drivers of the regional bank mash-up. How will this classic merger of two super-regional banks play out? What does it mean for traditional mid-tier banks? Should the Top 5 Banks be concerned? What about the digital-only banks? ... The industry awaits the answers that will come with the arrival of the entity dubbed "The Premier Financial Institution."

Charlotte also awaits a new banking headquarters -- 10 years after the crisis drove home the risks to a town solely focused on bank business. Today, cranes again fill the sky -- and Charlotte is celebrating the arrival of a new, large banking headquarters. Is this a success of "fintech branding" or just a fall-back to comfort-zone of Banktown, USA? What will the opportunities look like? Is it entirely rosy?

Join Finsiders on Tuesday, April 9 for a dialogue with industry and city leaders to explore implications of the first big M&A post-crisis on both the City of Charlotte and the Financial Services Industry.
