Mental models to understand finance concepts

Details

After a couple of Tech Topics in the past few meetups, this month we bring back our focus to Finance. Details of the talk given below.

Useful for Product Managers and Programmers working in Fintech. This will help apply right mental models to the Fintech problem statements you are working on.

Agenda
1. Talk on Mental models to understand finance concepts - Ciju (60m)
2. Networking (30m)

The talk
Economics and finance are full of jargon. For the uninitiated, it’s easy to get lost in the details and miss the big picture, losing the forest for the trees.
I have found mental models to be helpful in mapping this forest. Models that help situate concepts like macro, micro, investment, value, and so on. These are all connected, and once you see the links, the big picture isn’t that hard to grasp.
In this talk we will start with markets (trees of the forest). Markets lead to prices for goods and services, which leads to micro and macro economics. We even have markets for future prices, which introduces the idea of valuation, both in the present and projected into the future. That's where cash flows enter the picture, forming the backbone of investment analysis. And of course there is human component tied to all of this.
We will start with a broad overview to orient ourselves. And if time permits, we can discuss individual topics a little more.

Speaker
Ciju, is a programmer. He writes about various topics at https://ciju.in/writings and is currently building FinBodhi - https://finbodhi.com/

A game of Cricket
