Quilling, or 'filigrana' as it's known in most of the rest of the world, is a delicate art form made by twirling, pinching and otherwise manipulating thin strips to create exquisite pieces for varied applications. For over 4,000 years metals were both costly and the only media available; in the 15th century A. D., with paper mills popping up all over southern Europe (and sometimes some innovation on the part of the artists), both parchment and paper mostly replaced metals.

One of the most famous historical instances of quilling was documented while Marie Antoinette and her attendants were incarcerated waiting for Mme. La Guillotine. Marie and her entourage kept themselves distracted with quilling projects using hair pins as tools.

Today there has been a grand resurgence of this wonderful art form. Quite a number of new techniques have been devised in the past 50 years which have introduced quilling into the realm of fine art, rather than simply a cottage craft. An internet search of images will take your breath away!

We will have three different patterns for you to choose from; because there is quite a bit of preparation work involved, registration for the class will be closed 10 days before the instruction date. Attendance is limited to 12 attendees, and the cost is $15.00. All tools and supplies will be provided.

  • And don't forget to bring something to share at our popular potluck that we start things off with!

Date: Saturday, Nov. 7
Time: Noon (please be on time)
Cost: $15.00 cash to cover the cost of supplies
What to Bring: Something yummy to share for the potluck
