What we’re about
"FIT is not just an English conversation group. We talk about everything with smart people; that's why it is so interesting. We learn to talk in English without thinking and little by little our English improves." --Anna Maria (from Rome, now living in Paris)
As a FREE outreach for the Washington English Center https://www.washingtonenglish.org/ FIT, Friendly International Talk is just that: a place where internationals feel at home. We met for many years at the Georgetown Neighborhood Library in DC. Leaders are American-born teaching and government professionals. Since the pandemic we have been using Zoom and our lively discussions continue.
Our topics range from history of and current events in the DC area, to national and international news. We have devoted meetings to films chosen by the group, musical theatre of Stephen Sondheim, humor of Mel Brooks and Saturday Night Live, and even a documentary from the New Yorker Magazine about popcorn! We have read American short stories and poetry together.
Participants converse at least at a high intermediate level. We meet Monday and Wednesday mornings, 10 am-noon, and often have field trips to local museums and monuments. In the last few months we have taken tours of Planet Word, the Art Museum of the Americas, the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art, and the new World War I Memorial.
