AZT, Arizona Trail, Jaunt: Mogollon Rim to Double Springs, 56 miles
The What and Where: I'm planning to backpack the AZT from the Mogollon Rim (AZT mile 483.3, General Springs Cabin) North to Double Springs Campground (AZT mile 539.7), a distance of about 56 miles, over 6 days. Mileage range of 6.5 to 11.9 miles per day.
Five water caches are anticipated. (It's really dry in the forest.) Jugs or Platypus of water will be pre-positioned before the hike by vehicle. We will be carrying empty containers between Bear Boxes, where easy retrieval after the hike is possible.
I have had the maps printed, and I have mapped out what I believe are good places to cache water. Help appreciated.
Shuttle required.
Food protection (hanging, Rat Sack, Bear canister, etc.) recommended.
The Who: Perhaps you. This is a co-adventurer jaunt, meaning that this is not a guided trip and everyone is asked to contribute something to the success of the trip and to be responsible for themselves and their gear/food. Not only your smiling personality, something to help (logistics).
I'd like to hike with co-adventurers prior to the main jaunt to see how compatible we are. This might be combined with cache placement.
Ms. Millie Vanillie, Rescue Dog, will be joining us. Well-socialized Dogs are welcome - another reason for a pre-adventure meetup.
If you sign up, note that you are considered to be on the wait list until we have the opportunity to hike together.
The When: I apologize, but the start time is somewhat indefinite, probably about the last week of August. My preference is to start on a Monday. Indefinite because I strained my back and I am getting it back into condition. Also, I'm hoping for some rain and moderation of temperatures.
My guess now is a start date of August 24th or 25th.
Cheers, Rob
