The night before this Women’s Day, we invite you to come watch ‘Regarding Susan Sontag’, Nancy Kates’ documentary on the American novelist, critic and thinker, who also directed films and somehow landed on the cover of Cosmopolitan.
Sontag fearlessly followed her inner urge to speak out, never deeming a subject unworthy or too controversial, from cancer to AIDS to being called ‘lady writer’ to state politics and America’s blind egocentrism, as well as numerous writings on“low”popular culture, making what was once trash — B movies, pornography, and so on — subjects for serious cultural study.
The film draws on comments from close friends and partners of different eras to take you through her professional obsessions and messy personal life, reflecting on the figure she wanted to be and the person she became.
Doors open Tuesday March 7 at 6.30pm for a 7pm screening. Flamingo Shanghai , 7/F, Building 11, 207 Mengzi Road (between Xietu Road and Liyuan Road), near Madang Road metro station.
RSVP to bonnie.wang@flamingogroup.com to secure a seat, and bring your name card, follow us on WeChat, or like us on Facebook in exchange for free beer.
