Saving Sarasota - Environmental Circle Conversations

Details
6:30 PM Our Environmental Circle Conversations
It's about having a dialogue about the environmental crisis we are all facing worldwide. We all need to feel heard, express ourselves, learn, and share. We all need to feel empowered by each other. It takes a village; here, it starts with a circle.
If you'd like to bring a guest, they must RSVP to the meetup group.
We will talk about Saving Florida: Sarasota, Florida.
We are going to discuss what is happening in SARASOTA today, including the issues (water pollution, air pollution, overdevelopment, and offshore developments) we all need to look at.
PLEASE NOTE: Per our Nonprofit, our discussions are without politics or religion. We focus on the issues and come up with a solution.
We discuss the book we review(10 min) at the beginning of the meeting.
THE BOOK: Saving Florida (the book we review for this season) reveals how women's clubs prompted legislation to establish Florida's first state park, which became the core of Everglades National Park, in 1916--before women even had the right to vote. It talks about the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, and the Florida Audubon Society, which were instrumental in saving Florida.
Who were the three Marjories who fought to save Florida?
This book tells the story of women who led the fight for unprecedented changes in how the Sunshine State reveres its unique natural resources. They set the foundation for this century's environmental agenda, which came to include the idea of sustainable development. As a collective force, they forever altered how others saw women's roles in society.
The book: Saving Florida: Women's Fight for the Environment in the Twentieth Century
by Leslie Kemp Poole
Leslie Kemp Poole is an adjunct professor in the Environmental Studies and History departments at Rollins College and the author of Maitland.
You can find the book at your local Library or download and read it. I like to have the book in hand, but that's just me.
It’s better to start the books before the club; you don't have to finish them to join.
ABOUT: Book Circle Conversations on Florida's Environment
We highlight a book, then talk about Sarasota’s Issues.
It's about reading and sharing your finds of environmental books with a circle of people (make friends and invite friends) who crave conversations (like-minded or not) to learn, understand, and nourish Florida's uniqueness through books.
RULE: Please respect each other. We are Nonpartisan—not based on or partisan, especially toward any particular political group.
