One year ago, Hurricane Helene sent devastating flooding over the historic Jungle Prada Site. Home to two Indigenous Tocobaga mounds and the likely landing site of the 1528 Narvaez expedition, important cultural heritage was put in peril by Helene’s 7 feet of storm surge.
Join us for a special tour highlighting our recovery efforts, followed by a dynamic presentation by Dr. Uzi Baram, Professor Emeritus at New College of Florida, “Sea Level Rise and Cultural Heritage Sites in Florida.”
New weather patterns, larger storms, and rising sea levels are challenging communities and transforming conventional thinking. Archaeologists document the shifting seascape’s destruction of archaeological and historical sites and offer long-term perspectives on human adaptation and maladaptation to environmental changes. Dr. Baram, founder of the Public Archeology Lab at New College, will discuss his findings over the past two decades, animating the past and offering positive possibilities for the future.
Parking address: 1700 Park St. N, Saint Petersburg, FL, 33710. Turn west off Park Street at Elbow Lane. Head west toward the water, then turn south (left) into the gravel parking lot. Our gate is at the south end of the parking lot, with a large blue banner.
