The Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of Sisters in Crime is pleased to announce the featured speaker at our May 2023 meeting will be Julieanna Blackwell.
Location: Via Zoom and in-person at the Fruitville Public Library, 100 Apex Road, Sarasota, Florida. Lunch to follow the meeting at Gecko's Grill & Pub, 351 N Cattlemen Rd, Sarasota, FL 34232.
Description:
What makes a good short story? Why are some short stories better than others? Whether you are a reader or a writer, we will explore the basic elements needed for a good short story. In this class, we will discuss why stories work, why they don’t, and why understanding these components can enhance your enjoyment of short fiction as well as your writing.
Bio: A writer of short stories and essays, Julieanna Blackwell's work has appeared in Lunch Ticket, Literary Orphans, Slippery Elm Literary Journal, MoonPark Review, and elsewhere*.* The Naples Daily News published her humorous column of personal essays. She was a member of the editorial team that launched the award-winning 805 Literary and Arts Journal, the first literary journal published by a public library in the country. The journal’s stories and essays have appeared in Best Small Fictions, Best Micro Fictions, and Best of the Net Finalists. She was the co-ambassador of the Authors Guild-Tampa Branch 2018-2020. Currently, she conducts the Elements & Arcs Creative Writing Classes and Workshops, which were developed for the library patron interested in learning more about creative writing. A native Chicagoan, she lives in Florida.
