Welcome to the Highlighted Hike of the Month! Join the Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Trail Association for an exciting opportunity to explore the Orlando Wetlands. We will begin our hike by exploring the canopy and hopefully spotting beautiful epiphytes like the giant air plant, shoestring fern, and butterfly orchids.

Meeting Point:

  • Time: Please meet under the pavilion near the restrooms 15 minutes prior to the start of the hike. (8:15am) We will not be waiting for late attendees as the day will warm up quickly.
  • Duration: This hike will likely not take 3 hours, but it may. This hike will be slow and we will be taking in our surroundings as much as possible. If you are looking for speed this is not the event for you. (Though we hope to have some of those in the future!)

What to Expect:

  • Trail Length: Approximately 2-2.5 miles round trip.
  • Terrain:
  • First Half: On berm and boardwalk in direct sun.
  • Second Half: Undulating terrain with plenty of tree cover (may be muddy).
  • Wildlife: Be prepared for potential wildlife sightings, including large alligators and a variety of birds, making this a popular birding location.

What to Bring:

  • Water: Bring plenty of water, especially as warmer weather approaches.
  • Frozen Water Bottle (Suggested): A frozen water bottle can help keep you cool during the hike.
  • Insect Repellent: To combat bugs along the trail.
  • Sun Protection: Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are highly recommended. The first half of the hike will have no shade.
  • Weather-Appropriate Attire: Choose moisture-wicking fabrics for comfort, and prioritize bug and sun protection.
  • Snacks and Lunch: Pack a snack as you may get hungry (Even on a short hike like this one).

Important Considerations:

  • No Dogs: Dogs are not permitted at the Orlando Wetlands due to the presence of large alligators. This is for their safety as well as yours.
  • Family-Friendly: The hike is suitable for families, but children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Please ensure they have adequate sun protection and everything needed to stay cool.
  • Facilities: Restrooms are available at the start of the hike.
