Post Thanksgiving Bike Ride in North FL
Details
The bike ride from Fanning Springs trailhead to the historic railroad trestle bridge over the Suwannee River is a flat, and scenic 3.5-mile journey (about 7 miles round trip) along the Nature Coast State Trail. This is an easy
paved, flat, grade-separated rails-to-trails path built on an old Atlantic Coast Line Railroad bed. Starting from the Fanning Springs trailhead (we will ride our bikes into the park so bring a few dollars for admission) the trail heads north and then turns west toward Old Town. You will roll through quiet pine forests and rural North Central Florida landscapes.
The centerpiece of the ride is the early-1900s red steel railroad trestle spanning the Suwannee River. If you look down when the water is low, you can sometimes spot parts of the sunken 1886 steamboat City of Hawkinsville not far from the trestle. Manatees are also occasionally spotted in the river below.
Bring you water bottle, lunch and bike helmet. Note we are parking on the bike trail and not inside Fanning Spring but use this address: 18020 N.W. Highway 19 Fanning Springs FL 32693**. Questions: Text Mary-Slater 407-701-6475**
