Backpacking and Outdoor Skills Weekend - 3 Days/2 Nights
All Levels Welcome: Beginner + (**must have been on at least one other backpacking trip with the Loxahatchee Chapter)
You do not need to be an FTA Member to participate. However it is highly encouraged to become a member to support these events and maintenance of the trails.
Join us for a backpacking trip to Kitching Creek primitive site in Jonathan Dickinson State Park to learn valuable outdoor skills and backpacking tips to make your time in the woods more safe and enjoyable.
Did you get new gear for the holidays? Have you been thinking about experimenting with different backpacking meals? Do you want to work on your fire building skills? This is the perfect opportunity for you to come out and take a full zero day in the woods to hone your backpacking skills.
Decemeber 26
9am meetup at the Kitching Creek Trailhead at the back of the park. If you are uncertain where this is, ask the ranger for a map/guidance when you pull into the park. Short hike to Kitching Creek (about 3mi).
December 27
Workshops
- Fire skills
- Useful Knots
- Backpacking Meals (Thanks to a generous donation from our trail partner REI, we will be having a backpacking meal Taste Testing Lunch)
- Tent Setup Tips and Tricks
December 28
Leave camp by 10am to hike back to Parking lot.
**there is a water source at the campsite- but it WILL need to be filtered.
MINIMUM GEAR LIST
- Backpack
- Tent
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
- Flashlight
- Stove
- Cookware
- Eating Utensils
- Water filter
- Toilet paper + lightweight trowel. There is a privy, but always be prepared!
- Insect repellent
- Food for 2 lunches, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, plus anything you want to experiment with
- Snacks
**Be mindful of the weather and be prepared if there is rain or cooler temps in the forecast.
