# Florida wildlife agency considers bringing back barbaric steel traps: Banned in Florida 53 years ago, they may now be okayed for public use despite their record of catching pets, rare panthers, even children.
Florida wildlife agency considers bringing back barbaric steel traps • Florida Phoenix
FWC has been allowing these traps for decades but only under their oversight of a Special Use Permit. The SUP required the trapper to ask permission to use it, and s/he had to specify the reason, the species they HOPED to target, and the location. In truth, the SUP has been far too lax, but it was 100% better than this proposal - to merely just watch a video first! That is insanely reckless.
With a state population of 23 million, doesn't it seem logical that we should be improving and fortifying the SUP standards and safety protocols? That we (and FWC) would want to know more, not less, about who is using these dangerous devices, where, when, and why? That they would want some 'cya' here by requiring signage to warn people?
What is the problem with requiring signage, you may ask?
1) Because it is bad PR. It informs more people about what they are doing, and apparently, they prefer that people do not know. Translation: "out of sight, out of mind".
2) Trappers worry someone will trip, steal, or damage their traps.
Beware: There are penalties for anyone who does -- cameras are watching those traps and the general area.
Advocates' top four priorities:
1 - KEEP the Special Use Permit requirement for all steel jaw foothold, body crushing, and neck-hold traps; require signage, keep better records regarding the issuance of all SUP's.
2 - NO Homeowner Exemption! Eliminate any possibility that these steel jaw footholds, body crushing, and neck-hold traps can be used just because someone watched a "training" video!!
3 - Implement a simple, automated online permit system for our 23 million citizens; require the general public to obtain a temporary permit for ONE cage trap before taking our wildlife.
4 - Improve the definition of "nuisance animal" and stop allowing the trapping & killing of millions of our wildlife animals who do not fall under that definition. How do we do that? Start with #3!
