Black Bear Wilderness Wildlife Hike and Vegan Eats π»πΏ
Details
Join Florida Voices for Animals and Sierra Club for a special wildlife-watching and wilderness hiking experience at Black Bear Wilderness Area in Sanford.
Rather than treating this as simply a 7-mile hike, our goal is to move through the preserve at a comfortable pace, observe the different habitats, look and listen for wildlife, take photographs, and experience one of Central Floridaβs more impressive natural areas.
Black Bear Wilderness protects wetlands, cypress swamp, hardwood forest and wildlife corridors along the St. Johns River. It provides habitat for a wide variety of native Florida wildlife.
### π» Wildlife-watching experience
Possible wildlife sightings may include:
π» Florida black bears, π American alligators, 𦦠River otters, π¦ White-tailed deer, π¦ Raccoons, π Wild hogs, π’ Turtles, π¦
Hawks, wading birds and other native birds, π¦ Butterflies, insects and other wetland wildlife.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and that is part of being in a natural environment.
Our chances of seeing animals are often better when we:
π€« Keep voices relatively low in wildlife-rich areas
πΆ Move calmly rather than rushing through the trail
π Pay attention to movement, sounds, tracks and signs of wildlife
πΈ Give photographers time when something interesting is spotted
π» Maintain plenty of distance from animals
πΏ Avoid disturbing vegetation or leaving the designated trail
We want this to be a respectful wildlife-observation experience, not a race to finish the loop.
### Why are we starting early?
An 8:00 AM trail start is intentional.
Starting earlier gives us:
π€οΈ Cooler hiking conditions
πΎ Better opportunities to observe wildlife when the preserve is quieter
πΈ Better morning light for wildlife and nature photography
π₯Ύ Enough time to comfortably complete the rugged trail
π± Time for a vegan lunch afterward without returning to Tampa extremely late. We may occasionally pause when wildlife is spotted, so our group pace may be slower than someone hiking the trail purely for exercise.

## πΈ Wildlife photographers welcome
If you enjoy wildlife or nature photography, feel free to bring your camera.
A DSLR/mirrorless camera, binoculars or even just your phone can make this a particularly enjoyable trail.
We will make reasonable stops for wildlife sightings and photography while also keeping the group together and completing the trail safely.
Please never approach wildlife for a closer picture.
## π§οΈ Weather and trail conditions
This is a true Florida wilderness environment, and conditions can change considerably following rain.
The trail may be:
π§ Wet
π€ Muddy
π³ Rooty and uneven
π¦ Buggy
π§οΈ Rainy
βοΈ Hot and humid
Light rain will not automatically cancel the event.
However, thunderstorms, lightning, flooding, trail closures or other unsafe conditions may require us to delay, shorten, modify or cancel the hike.
We will monitor conditions as the event approaches.
π» Restrooms: There are no public restrooms at the trailhead or along the trail, so please plan to use a restroom before arriving. We recommend stopping at a gas station or other public facility shortly before reaching the preserve.

π§ At least 2 liters of water per person β more is recommended
π₯€ Electrolytes
π₯Ύ Sturdy hiking/trail shoes with good grip
π¦ Bug spray
βοΈ Sunscreen
π§’ Hat and sunglasses
π Snacks or energy food
π§οΈ Light rain protection
π Comfortable moisture-wicking clothing
𧦠Extra socks if conditions are wet
π Optional binoculars

Water-resistant footwear can be especially useful if there has been recent rain.
## π Wildlife safety
All wildlife should be observed from a safe and respectful distance.
Please:
β’ Never feed wildlife
β’ Never approach a bear, alligator or other animal for a photograph
β’ Stay on the designated trail
β’ Keep food secured
β’ Follow instructions from the hike leaders
β’ Allow animals an escape route if encountered on or near the trail
If we encounter wildlife, we may stop and observe quietly rather than trying to move closer.
## π± Vegan Eats afterward

Our tentative destination is:
π½οΈ Dixie Dharma / Dharma Southern Kitchen at Henry's Depot
π 212 W 1st St, Sanford, FL 32771
The restaurant is tentative and may change depending on when we finish, restaurant crowds, weather/trail conditions and what works best for the group.
This outing brings together several things we care about:
πΏ Experiencing and appreciating Florida's natural habitats
π» Observing wildlife respectfully
π₯Ύ Physical and mental wellbeing through time outdoors
π€ Connecting with like-minded people
π± Supporting vegan food and compassionate living
π Learning more about conservation and the ecosystems wildlife depend on.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we can estimate the group size and coordinate transportation.
Come prepared to slow down, look around, listen, and experience a wilder side of Central Florida. π»πΏπΈπ₯Ύ
