Award-winning hobbyist orchid grower and breeder Allen Black will discuss “Brassavola-Cattleya Alliance Novelty Hybrids” during Gulf Coast Orchid Alliance’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Naples Conference Center, 1455 Pine Ridge Road.
Black has been growing orchids for more than 30 years and has originated 118 new hybrids. In 2023, he received the “Excellence in Hybridizing” award from the American Orchid Society.
In his presentation, Black will note how commercial growers approach orchid breeding with the goal of financial viability while hobbyist growers like himself tend to be more experimental. He will share photographs of his work and have some of his hybrids available for sale.
The evening will also include dozens of blooming orchids brought by club members for judging. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served.
