Farewell Meetup @ Google

Details
It is with a heavy heart that I announce this will be my last meetup as lead Organizer of FlutterNYC. I can't believe it's been 5½ years since our very first meetup on June 14, 2018. I started this meetup group because I was an early adopter of Flutter, and I so very badly wanted to find a local group of developers to geek out on this exciting new technology. Since none existed, I decided to create one. I reached out to the OG of Flutter, Very Good Ventures, and asked them to speak about their famous Hamilton app, the first production Flutter app ever. The rest, as they say, is history. 35 wonderful meetups/worshops/hackathons/socials later, I find it poetically fitting to have David DeRemer of VGV back to give the closing talk at our farewell meetup. I hope you can join us! If you are interested in taking on the lead Organizer role for this group, please DM me on Meetup. I will still be around to assist as much as I can. Thank you for all your support over the years!
An Intro to Kotlin Multiplatform for Flutter Developers, by Sam Harris
The quality of cross-platform app development has never been stronger and this former "native only" convert will compare two of the front runners, Kotlin Multiplatform and Flutter.
We will start by looking at the basics of Kotlin Multiplatform and compare how it stacks up against the mighty Flutter framework. We will take some time to understand the architectural principles and design philosophies underpinning each platform. As you may have already guessed, we will not choose a single winner. But I will make my recommendation on which platform aligns best with different:
- Organizational structures
- Team expertise
- Apps
We will explore some case studies showcasing successful implementations, lessons learned, and the tangible benefits of each platform. And even get a demo of a Godzilla based Kotlin Multiplatform app.
Whether you're an app development veteran seeking to expand your toolkit or a newcomer to the cross-platform arena, this session promises a deep dive into two of the most talked-about solutions in the industry. Equip yourself with the knowledge to make informed decisions, ensuring your projects not only succeed but thrive in a multi-platform world.
The Flutter Adoption Toolkit, by David DeRemer
An introduction to processes and tools for large companies to streamline the evaluation and adoption of Flutter, or any disruptive new technology, to reduce risk and ensure the best outcomes.
It’s not easy to convince a team, let alone an organization, to adopt a disruptive new technology and change the way software is developed. Flutter, as one of the fastest growing new technologies in the mobile development space, presents a tantalizing new opportunity for modernization and transformation. But, how does a team or leader navigate the process of evaluation and adoption successfully? Questions a leader should ask:
- How can we understand if a new technology is the right choice for our team? For our organization?
- How do we validate real impacts and results (not just the hypothetical promised benefits)?
- How do we convince the team and ultimately our decision makers, and not just gain acceptance but build real excitement?
- Where and how can we get help and support to improve our chances of success?
At Very Good Ventures, we’ve been at the forefront of the Flutter modernization trend. We’ve seen many different paths that companies have to successfully adopt Flutter. In this talk, we will review a roadmap of evaluation to adoption that helps tech organizations more effectively drive a new technology, such as Flutter, to a successful outcome.
