What we’re about
Hi there!
We are a new social group in Gloucestershire and neighbouring areas for enthusiasts of folk-rock (very loose definition - mainly modern with a lot of non-English-language north-European elements), medieval-electronica and similar music genres - including the kind of music from Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and other things - basically a mixture. Please note this is not specifically a pagan group - however some of the bands and events we might go to include some pagan elements, but our music-appreciation group in itself is just that: about appreciation of a range of music genres and bands that describe themselves as “folk rock”, "folktronica", “medieval-electronica”, "neo-medieval", “pagan rock” and similar… Playlists of example tracks are on Spotify if you search for "FRGP" - if you don't use Spotify there are some YouTube links below...
There'll also sometimes be events further afield including in other countries like Germany, Sweden, ... Some of these will be just small events aimed at people living there, while some others will be intended as proper trips away for festivals etc.
This is a friendly, respectful and non-political group about types of music and some associated historical styles (e.g. medieval-style clothing) - and is against any form of extremism or hate-speech.
We’ll start initially in the general wide area of Worcester, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford, with a pub evening in each of these once a month in a side-room / function room where we can have our own music and chat about the bands and music, and possible future gigs & events we could go to. We'll also soon start some open-sessions in pubs with the musicians among us learning up and playing some of these tracks - if you're a musician and interested in playing at future sessions then please get in touch :)
18+ only please re self-responsibility, access to pubs, etc. Membership to our friendly welcoming group is free! Common sense applies - while the organiser(s) will try to run events smoothly and safely, attendance is at your own risk so please just be aware as you normally would be in any open social group meeting up in public spaces.
If you’re new to this type of music, there’s a good number of bands each with their own character and style. There are some example tracks in several Spotify playlists under user "FRGP". Also now we've got a YouTube channel with playlists -

See all- Kalandra - gig in Liverpool by this wonderful Norwegian band (who started here!)O2 Academy Liverpool, Merseyside
Norwegian band Kalandra blends metal, folk and progressive elements, inspired by Nordic mythology and nature. They actually started in Liverpool!
“Our music is a good mix of a lot of things.... I’m inspired by Eivør. I’m also inspired by folk songs; Mongolian folk songs and Peruvian, Bulgarian and obviously Nordic folk songs.”
www.kalandra.no"Spearheaded by four Norwegian/Swedish musicians, Kalandra is a band with roots in melancholic Nordic folk and gritty guitars, weaving ethereal melodies into raw and eerie musical landscapes.
Formed in the beginning of 2011, they’ve spent a decade crafting their own unique sound, building their own studio, whilst also touring and playing support for similar acts such as Gåte, Seigmen, Wardruna and Eivør. Their break came with a cover of ‘Helvegen’ by Wardruna, that amassed over four million views on YouTube. Since leading them to join forces with the acclaimed record label ByNorse Music.
In 2020 their first full-length album ‘The Line’ was released. The album was a journey in introspection, the feelings of wonder, anger, loss and acceptance at watching both your own life and the world around you unfold.
From their studio in Oslo, the band has since created music for the HBO Nordic’s series “Beforeigners” and the full soundtrack to the game series “Kingdom Two Crowns".Some examples of their tracks:

From their website - www.tewkesburymedievalfestival.co.uk
Tewkesbury Medieval Festival has been the high spot of Tewkesbury’s summer since 1983.
It is now widely regarded as the largest free medieval gathering of its kind in Europe, attracting re-enactors, traders, entertainers, and visitors from all over the world.
Its central feature is a spectacular re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury on part of the site of the original battle of 1471.
Many of the participants including wives and children live as a medieval army in authentic encampments for the whole weekend. It also features a wide range of period entertainment, including music, dance and drama as well as collection of fascinating characters from the past. These may include surgeons, preachers and even the odd dragon keeper.
Our busy and colourful medieval market has everything from a suit of armour or a fabulous gown, to pot of herbs or bag of sweets on sale. There are also associated events in the town, which is decorated with authentic medieval banners for the festival period.
Food and drink (including ale specially brewed for the occasion,) are widely available and best of all, despite its size and popularity, entry to Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is free, and it hard working volunteer directors are determined to keep it that way.BY BUS:
Regular buses from Cheltenham and the town centre pass within 2 minutes walk of the festival site.BY CAR:
Follow the yellow signs from outside of town, they take you to our car parks. Parking costs just £10 per car all day. Please do NOT park on the streets surrounding the festival, it upsets local residents and police and can cause traffic congestion, especially for emergency vehicles. And you may get a parking ticket!
If you are using a Sat Nav, please use the postcode GL20 5SX to get you to the Leisure Centre which is adjacent to the Festival site. The main site is just 5 minutes walk from the town centre. ... All car parks are closed and locked at 6.30pm. By that time town centre car parks are free. ...The nearest railway station is Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. Buses are available to take you from the railway station to Tewkesbury town centre.
... We run our own campsite, 5 minutes away from the main festival site, on the main Cheltenham-Tewkesbury bus route. It opens from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. A relaxed campsite with good loos and hot showers included.
Can I fight in the battle? No, only those members of signed up re-enactors’ households can join the battle.
How do I get involved in re-enactment? As you walk around the Living History camps, you will see many different groups re-enacting many different things. Please speak to the re-enactors who will be able to advise you how to get involved.
Is the battle suitable for everyone? Please note, if you are bringing someone on the Autistic Spectrum, someone with noise sensitivity, or your dog, there will be loud bangs during the re-enactment each afternoon. The battle lasts roughly an hour (plus waiting time beforehand), so please bear this in mind if you have young children.
What time does the battle start? The battle starts at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday, lasting roughly an hour. We recommend you get there early to be sure of a good view. - tAngerinecAt - gig in BristolThe Louisiana, Bristol
"Hurdy-gurdy electronica duo" only begins to describe the depth of tAngerinecAt with their unique blend of sounds and styles ...
"Originating in Ukraine and residing in North Wales, tAngerinecAt embodies a rich tapestry of musical influences that intertwine West and East. The duo conveys a strong anti-war, anti-fascist, and anti-ecocide message, where the hauntingly intimate allure of dark jazz a cappella coexist with the fierce energy of hammering industrial electronic beats and poignant spoken word. It reflects the profound mastery of Ukrainian-born Zhenia Purpurovsky, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, arranger, conductor, and actor, in partnership with the visionary sound designer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Chilton who hails from Britain. With a degree in folkloristics, Purpurovsky adeptly juggles rich cultural symbols, creating a tapestry of meaning.
'Grief' emerges as a masterfully crafted concoction of free-spirited, underground resistance brewed in a cauldron of haunting Twin Peaks-esque soundscapes and cathartic revelations, while shifting between languages. Even with its bleak undertones, this work evokes themes of hope, love, unity, and beauty, providing a counterpoint to escapism by embracing reality and navigating through despair to discover pathways to liberation."Official website - www.tangerinecat.net
