Wild food, Waterfalls, & Wildfire Ecology @ Penasquitos Canyon San Diego

Apologies for late notice but I’m back in SoCal for a few days! Come join me and explore a hidden wild gem nestled in San Diego suburbia. Follow a botanist and learn what wild plants are edible or have medicinal uses. Enjoy views of a small waterfall and dip your toes in a swimming pool (depending on seasonal water availability)

I now am working for NASA on integrative wildfire safety planning and implementation, so there will be ample opportunity to discuss wildfire ecology and how to address the growing crises of megafires and urban fires.

DIRECTIONS: Meet at the Los Penasquitos Canyon Trailhead (Southeast) See link for location: https://goo.gl/maps/7bQGP4R9GRjb2XRF8

DIFFICULTY: Moderate. Roughly 6 miles roundtrip (if we go to the all the way waterfall). Relatively flat trail with not much elevation gain (slight descent to waterfall, some elevation gain on the way back). Mix of sun and shade. Some spots with uneven, rough, rocky terrain with poison oak. Access to creek.

INSTRUCTIONS/SUPPLIES:
Bring the following:

• minimum of 1 quart (32 oz) of water per person.
• snacks and/or full meal.
• Wear weather protection (jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.),
• Durable hiking socks and close-toed hiking shoes w/good grip
• First aid kit (Band-Aids, antiseptic, allergy medicine, tweezers, etc.)
• Bring trash bag for litter along the trail
• Swimsuit (optional)
