Details

This will be a leisurely paced walk.
2.1 mi total out & back length
682 ft elevation gain

The Hawksbill Mountain Trail is a breathtaking trail that ascends to a rugged summit, providing a 360-degree view of Linville Gorge and Pisgah National Forest. The hike to the top of Hawksbill Mountain, which stands at an elevation of 4,009 ft, is incredibly rewarding as it offers panoramic views of the Linville Gorge "canyon," with the valley floor situated below you. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Charlotte skyline! The short hike is strenuous, featuring a short climb. The trail to the Hawksbill summit begins at the parking area on an unpaved Pisgah National Forest service road. After hiking for about a half-mile, the summit trail turns left just before reaching the Jonas Ridge Trail. From here, the summit trail becomes increasingly rocky and, after hiking for 1/4 mile, reaches the ridge. Just before you reach the ridge, the hike splits. Either trail will take you to the top. The trail to the right is longer and more gradual. Go straight for a short, steep climb. At the top (which is a popular camping spot), go to the right for the best views or to the left for a better view of Table Rock.

We will plan to meet and carpool from the Food Lion on Hwy 181 in Morganton because parking is limited and fills up early.

Please bring water and snacks. Dogs are welcome but must remain on leash at all times.
