Kayak from Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay - 7.0 Miles

Details

Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay – 7.0 miles. - We’ll be starting at Turtle Bay, and ending at Waimea Bay with a ½ way rest point at Sunset Beach. This is always one of our most enjoyable paddles because it’s only 7 miles, which is about 2 1/2 hours of paddling at the pace the group moves, it’s usually with the wind, which makes the paddling much easier, and this section of the North Shore has great beaches and scenery. If surf permits we go into Kawela Bay, which is a pretty, secluded little bay just North of Turtle Bay. Given the distance and fact that the wind is at our backs, it’s a great paddle for first timers with the club, so we usually have a good turn-out on this paddle. You can also elect to do ½ the route and paddle from Turtle Bay to Sunset Beach (4 miles), or from Sunset Beach to Waimea Bay(3 miles). I think this route is a natural to do a short bit of snorkeling at Sharks cove just before Waimea Bay. The bottom here has some great coral and rock features with lots of fish and turtles in the area. So, if you’re up for it, bring along your mask and fins and you can snorkel the sharks cove area after the paddle. So, here’s the plan…..Meet at the Turtle bay Stables (first left after the guard shack, then stay to the right and follow the dirt road out to the stables) at 8:00 AM to off-load kayaks. Cars leaving Turtle Bay and going to the finish point for the shuttle will be leaving at 8:20. We’ll plan on putting in for the paddle at 9:00 to 9:15 AM and finishing up at noon at Waimea Bay.

*==== CHANGED YOUR MIND? ====
Be sure to check the Meetup – Hua Iki web site for any changes and updates and to change your RSVP if you change your mind.

*==== KNOW YOUR LIMITS ====
Know your capabilities, limits, forecast conditions and check your equipment before you go. Sun Screen, hat and plenty of water are a must. Sun glasses, gloves and dry bag are a good idea. Remember to stay in sight of the group and TELL OTHERS IF YOU ARE LEAVING. You alone are responsible for your health and safety. Check conditions at http://www.surfnewsnetwork.com/ or call the National Weather service at 808-973-4380 (#2 to get wind speeds and #3 for surf report). Knowing the latest forecast, you can decide (based upon individual abilities) whether to paddle, or stay home and clean the yard.

*==== NEED TO RENT ====
The club does not own, rent, pick up or deliver kayaks to events. Check club site for possible ride sharing/equipment and tandems. If you need to rent a kayak, Kailua Beach Adventures and Go Bananas gives our Meetup members a discount off regular rental rates! MENTION YOU ARE JOINING THE CLUB TRIP. They also have car top pads, straps, dry bags, etc. Call the KBA at 808-262-6555 or Go Bananas at 808-737-9514, they also have a store in Pearl City if you live in that area. You can also pick up your kayak the day before, after 3 pm so you can drive straight to the put-in the next day; let them know and they’ll be happy to accommodate your request.
