Kayak from Waimea Bay to Mokuleia - Shark cages !!! - 6 Miles, or 11 Miles

Details

Waimea Bay To Mokuleia & Shark Cage Paddle, 6 mile short course or if you want to go to the Shark Cages, 11 miles for the full route.

Aloha Paddlers!! We’ll be doing the next route of our next Circle Island paddle, going from Waimea Bay to Mokuleia - 9.5 miles, or about a 3 hour outing IF we go in a straight line. However to to paddle out to the shark cages, we'll need to veer off of a straight line and the course will then be 11 miles. Because of the distance and open ocean environment of the longer course, we're also scheduling a shorter 5 mile route - from Waimea Bay straight to Haleiwa Bay Beach Park, for the paddlers who are not ready for an 11 mile paddle. If you’re up for a longer paddle, the 11 mile route to Mokuleia Beach Park via the shark cages is it. It's mostly down wind (great for kayak sails) so will take approx. 3 to 4 hours depending on wind conditions, wave direction and enthusiasm of our paddlers. One of the real attractions of this route is that it can take us to the Shark Cage operations. Those that want to, can paddle out about 20 minutes off our straight line course and get right up next to the shark cages. This provides a good bit of excitement when the sharks are in the area just a short distance from our kayaks. It’s a sight you rarely get to see……….and what we've learned when we've done this in the past is that the sharks pay little attention to the kayaks as they’re eagerly looking for anything that might be thrown off the shark cage boat. In the past, we’ve had one of our paddlers, Rich Conolly, get off his kayak and snorkel in the area so he could get some good pics of the sharks, and he got back to his kayak with nearly all of his body parts intact………….Nah, just kidding, they pretty much ignored him…..Lucky for him! See the results of our last paddle by clicking on the photos section of the web site and clicking on “Bob's video” which will take you to YouTube and a video of the sharks in the water around us. Bring an underwater camera (and a long handle). The species of shark in the are are generally Galapagos and Grey Reef Sharks, both pretty non-aggressive types. Meet at Waimea Bay Beach Park at 7:30 AM, and off-load boats and equipment. The shuttle cars will leave the Bay at EXACTLY 7:50 AM - SO DON'T BE LATE!!! . After the shuttle, we put in at Waimea Bay by 8:45 AM. Finish up between 1:00 and 2;00 PM. We'll hope for great down-wind conditions! See ya all there!!
