"Esther Newton Made me Gay" - Film and Conversation with Esther Newton
"Esther Newton Made Me Gay" is a 2022 documentary directed by Jean Carlomusto that explores the groundbreaking life and work of cultural anthropologist Esther Newton. The film traces her journey as a pioneering scholar of LGBTQ+ communities, her personal awakening to gay life in the 1950s, and her role in shaping feminist, lesbian, and queer studies.
Beyond chronicling her academic achievements, the documentary offers an intimate portrait of Newton as a butch lesbian navigating identity, community, and activism across decades of social change. It highlights her seminal research on drag culture, her contributions to the development of queer theory, and her influence on generations of scholars and activists. At the same time, the film celebrates her resilience and joy, weaving in her passion for dog agility competitions as a metaphor for persistence and play.
