À propos de nous
The ORIGINAL hiking group in Central Virginia, and still the best! The Charlottesville Chapter and the Southern Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club are the oldest trail maintenance and hiking organizations in the Charlottesville area and the Valley, helping and hiking trails since 1985-86! (Way before Meetup.) Our members are avid hikers who love the trails so much we recognize the vital need to maintain them for all to enjoy. Hike leaders include folks who have thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, all of the trails in Shenandoah National Park, and across the planet many foreign countries. Our Chapter’s leaders have combined over 350 years of hiking and 100 years of hike leader experience. The PATC uses only certified hike leaders.
We have a lot of fun exploring local trails, but trail building and maintenance is the centerpiece of the PATC's mission. The PATC maintains 240 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Rockfish Gap at the south end of Shenandoah National Park to Pine Grove Furnace in Pennsylvania and over 1000 miles of other trails in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The effort requires the contributions of hundreds of volunteers, who serve as trail maintainers, trail crew members, land management specialists, and in many other capacities. PATC volunteers log tens of thousands of service hours every year, in their efforts to keep hiking trails safe, sustainable, and accessible. The vast majority of the trails you hike are maintained by volunteers, not paid federal employees.
You do not need to be a PATC member to hike with us or do trail maintenance, though we hope that you will consider joining the club. Your dues contribute to purchasing equipment used to maintain trails, acquiring land for parking areas and buffers along the Appalachian Trail, and building/maintaining trail shelters and cabins. And membership entitles you to rent one of PATC’s 45+ cabins in the region.
So don't just HIKE the trails, HELP the trails! Come join us for some fun!
Members must have a profile picture of yourself to join the group.

Flying McLeods Trail Crew - Work Trip
Lieu non spécifié pour l'instantThe first work trip of the season will be held on Saturday, April 25th. We will meet up to do trail work at various locations in the South District of Shenandoah National Park.
If you wish to attend, please let us know by completing the sign-up form by 9 PM on Tuesday, April 21th.
Please note, depending on the number of responses we may need to limit the size of the crew. If we do, we will send out a notice and set up a waitlist.
Please read the rest of this email before filling out the form.
Everyone that attends shall fill out their own form. One person per entry. It’s very important to complete the sign-up form. It collects the data we need to eliminate paperwork at the crews’ gathering site.
One question on the form, if you are attending, is your Round-Trip Travel Time (in hours) to the Dundo Picnic Area. Here is a Google Map link for the picnic area that can be used to plan your trip.
All Flying McLeods and other PATC volunteers in SNP are required to submit a Volunteer Service Agreement (VSA) each year. Contact me if you need instructions to file a VSA with the park.
After the trail work, we’ll have an optional Potluck Picnic. We will have the picnic at the Dundo Picnic Area. This month’s theme is Chili Cookoff. The format is bringing your own beverages and a dish of your choice to share with a ten or so people. We need mains, sides, and salads (not just appetizers and desserts). Both homemade and store-bought items are fine.
To avoid duplication, please check the Food List for items that have already been committed. Use the signup form to list what food you are bringing. The list will be updated nightly. To reduce our environmental impact, please bring your own plates, silverware, serving utensils, etc. Also, don’t forget to bring a chair.
Any crew member is welcome to camp at the Ivy Creek Maintenance Hut on Friday and/or Saturday night. Email me if you need more information or don't have a key.
All participants under the age of 18 must have prior approval to attend. All workers under 18 shall wear hard hats (We can provide them). Everyone else is encouraged to wear one.
