ABOUT THE PERFORMER
CC Carter is a seasoned Chicago Slammer and performance poet with national prominence on the performance poetry scene. Whether giving keynote performances on the complexities of Marriage Equality, performing at lesbian cultural events, or presenting performance lectures on university campuses on the intersections of diversity, CC gives voice to her layered truths of being femme, lesbian, multicultural, and a mother.
Her poetry and stage work make her one of the few spoken word artists to showcase regularly on Olivia cruises and at women’s music festivals including the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, National Womyn’s Music Festival, and Sistahfest, as well as garnering her opening credits for Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, Cheryl Clarke and Dorothy Allison. Her one woman show, Living Large In a Shrinking America, sold out all three shows in Provincetown during women’s week.
CC's first poetry collection, Body Language, was nominated for a 2003 Lambda Literary Award. She is the winner of a host of poetry slams, including the Fifth Annual Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Competition and the First Annual Behind Our Masks Poetry Slam. Her work is currently anthologized in over 15 collections of poetry and prose including Best Lesbian Erotica, Best Black Women's Erotica, Does Your Mama Know and Women Warriors: 35 Women Leaders in the Spoken Word Revolution. She has created and maintained several traditions in the poetry community, including national and local poetry slams for people of color, as well as Women of Color nights at Mountain Moving Coffeehouse.
In 2001, CC founded POW-WOW, Inc, a weekly spoken-word venue that has received honors and award recognition for being a safe space for women to develop, showcase, and listen to other women artists. POW-WOW is a staple for the international and national poetry elite – having showcased Stacyann Chin, sharon bridgforth, Eve Ensler, and a host of Def Poetry Jam artists who list POW-WOW as a “must do” on their tour schedules. She has also produced large scale events for the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Chicago Gay Games.
As a result of her arts and activism work, CC Carter has received numerous awards and honors, including being inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame for her work as an advocate in Arts and Culture; the Trailblazer Award for her work and curation of Lesbian theatre projects; and the Model of Hope Award by Pride and Equality Magazine. In 2005 she was one of six international recipients to be dubbed with the esteemed title by Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) for her work in creating a safe space for women artists who are survivors of violence.
ABOUT EMCEE SONYA
Sonya the Urban Sunflower (aka Prescott) always had a longing from the moment she received her first vinyl 45, and an orange and white record player. She recalls sitting on the floor of her parents’ Southampton apartment at the age of six, captivated by the sounds of Jermaine Jackson. The melody, the arrangement of the song… it was from that moment her interest was sparked. As an outlet she turned to writing, mostly poetry. In 2003 she decided to transform her poetry into music, and a few years later Sonya was hired as a songwriter for a local entertainment company. Now she’s a jazzy solo singer with a growing following. (See music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0d0eCXCPAw)
