Bioethics & Institutional Conflicts of Interest: A Case Close to Home
The literature on biomedical conflicts of interest tends to focus on the ways in which research integrity and patient safety are prejudiced when researchers are funded by the Pharmaceutical Industry. But similar ethical problems also arise at the macro level when institutions, such as hospitals and universities depend on drug company funding to support research or patient care. Over the past half century, the University of Toronto and three of its affiliated hospitals — Sick Kids, CAMH, and UHN — have been involved in a series of major scandals. One scandal in particular — involving the U of T, Sick Kids Hospital, Apotex and Dr. Nancy Olivieri — achieved worldwide infamy and has resulted, to date, in the publication of four books, a blockbuster movie, a plethora of scholarly articles, plus innumerable newspaper and magazine stories and television programmes. Another book is on the way, and a Netflix series is on the cards. In this talk, I'm going to explore the conceptual elements of "conflict of interest" and show how institutional conflict of interest lies at the heart of this greatest of all Canadian academic scandals. I'll also discuss role played by academic leaders and hospital bioethicists. Arthur Schafer https://umanitoba.ca/arts/arthur-schafer Professor Department of Philosophy University of Manitoba **About the Speaker:** Arthur Schafer is a Canadian ethicist specializing in professional and applied ethics, with a special focus on bioethics, philosophy of law, social philosophy and political philosophy. He is the Founding Director of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba. He is also a full professor in the Department of Philosophy and an ethics consultant for the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Schafer has published widely in the fields of moral, social, and political philosophy. He is author of *The Buck Stops Here: Reflections on moral responsibility, democratic accountability and military values*, and co-editor of two books: *Ethics and Animal Experimentation* and *Fragile Freedoms: the global struggle for human rights*. His curriculum vitae lists more than 90 scholarly articles and book chapters, covering a wide range of topics, with a special focus on issues in professional and bio-medical ethics. Professor Schafer is National Research Associate of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, which has published two of his Reports. Etienne Brûlé was believed to be the first European to travel the Humber River, and the Toronto Carrying-Place on a secret mission for Samuel de Champlain. During the 1660s, the Humber River provided food and building material for the Seneca village of Teiaiagon. With the rise of York to the east in 1793, grist mills were built and provided the material for Toronto's growth well into the 19th century. Many historians consider the Humber River watershed the life blood of Toronto and southern Ontario. The Humber River is an historic river and tells the tale of not only Toronto, but also of Canada itself. This walking tour is for all fitness levels and skills with a few slight hills and dips and some stairs. Please dress for the weather. **Is public speaking fear or anxiety holding you back or limiting your potential in your life or career?** If so this immersive weekend (retreat like) experience could be for you. The format for the weekend is an evolution of my mission to help people **transmute subconscious fears** and blocks and self-limiting beliefs into public speaking passion, authenticity, and confidence. I've honestly never felt more certain that I’ve found the secret to **unlocking speaking power in a way that actually lasts.** I designed this weekend to be an inspiring climb up **The Public Speaking Breakthrough Ladder.** I've designed each rung to unlock a new, empowering state of being in your public speaking and then **lock that feeling into your nervous system.** Through curated quotes, deep questions, story and message prompts and a few other secret ingredients we will progress though the following 3 phases. Before I describe the format I want to acknowledge that just the thought of public speaking can feel overwhelming, but this is a **safe**, **judgment-free zone.** You will be speaking in this weekend retreat but this weekend isn't about having to perform or being put on the spot; it's about recalibrating your system so you can feel **safe and calm** as you speak. * **Phase 1: Breakthroughs 1 to 3.** * **Awareness:** What we witness, we can influence. We bring the blocks out of the shadows and share them to release their grip. * **Courage:** We'll explore courage's earliest meaning - "to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart." - as a **powerful transmuting tool.** * **Acceptance:** This isn't about passivity; it’s about actively allowing the resistance to come and out so we reclaim our power. * * **Phase 2: Breakthroughs 4 to 6.** * **Connection**: Once we connect with ourselves we learn to connect with others and lock that safety it into your subconscious. * **Confidence:** The shift from **"seeking approval" to "granting permission."** You'll learn to trust in your nervous system to stay present. * **Intention:** Breaking the habit of "playing small" and moving from how am I doing to **what is my message and how is it impacting?** * * **Phase 3: Breakthroughs 7 to 9** * **Authenticity:** Stripping away what you think you should be as a speaker to discover and **embrace who you actually are.** * **Authority:** For this weekend authority is a magnetic command that comes from knowing why you and your message matter. * **Bliss:** The final rung. The "flow state" where the fear is gone and speaking becomes something you enjoy. If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!). **HOW IT WORKS** **Step 1: Bring a topic** Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event. **Step 2: Circle up & share** We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds. **Step 3: Walk, talk & float** We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!" **Step 4: Feel more alive** Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others.
