Book Club: The Hero with a Thousand Faces
Details
A relaxed Ghostlights book club on myth, archetypes, and why old stories still matter.
For this gathering, we’ll be reading and discussing The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, one of the most influential books on myth ever written. Campbell’s central idea is that many stories, across different cultures and periods, seem to follow similar patterns: departure, ordeal, transformation, return. Beneath gods, monsters, quests, and underworld journeys, he saw recurring structures that still shape the stories we tell now.
This won’t be an academic seminar or a formal class. The idea is simply to gather and talk about myth, archetype, symbolism, and the strange endurance of certain stories.
We might touch on things like:
- the hero’s journey and whether it still matters
- myth as a living force rather than something dead or historical
- recurring symbols, patterns, and archetypes
- the role of myth in religion, folklore, literature, film, and even games
- whether modern life has lost touch with initiation, meaning, or sacred story
- why some stories seem to stay with us more than others
If you’ve read the book, great. If you’ve only dipped into it, that’s also completely fine. It’s a rich and sometimes dense book, so there’s no pressure to arrive with a perfectly formed interpretation. The aim is good conversation rather than completionism.
You’re also welcome if you’re simply curious about myth and want to listen in.
As with previous Ghostlights book clubs, this will be a thoughtful but low-pressure space. Nothing formal, no performance, and no need to be an expert. Just a chance to talk with other people drawn to stories, symbols, imagination, and the deeper patterns that seem to repeat across time.
All are welcome!
