Monthly FOSS Chch meet up

Details

The purpose of this meet up is to let people learn and teach about Free and Open Source Software in all its varied splendour :) - we'll be doing talks, demos, and open discussion. Topics - I hope we'll encounter most of these during any given session - can be introduction-to-FOSS related, deeply technical, related to employment, specific software applications, FOSS on Linux, Windows, OS X and elsewhere. It might include installing software for people, helping them figure out how to use it once it's there, hacking on specific code bases, learning how to make open source contributions, learning how to use developer tools, and other stuff. Remember, like FOSS itself, this group is community driven - if people come along and want to do or discuss something, we'll do it!

Past ideas for specific activities could include things like

• applying brand images to our Etherpad-lite (node.js concurrent editor) instance on https://etherpad.nzoss.org.nz

• applying brand images to our Gitlab (Ruby-on-rails instance on https://git.nzoss.org.nz

• improving the API support (e.g. for mobile app access) for our Rocket.Chat (Meteor.js-based open source Slack alternative) instance, https://chat.nzoss.nz - this one involves working a bit with Docker...

• using FOSS to build some introductory FOSS documentation (e.g. a paper brochure) for promotion by the NZOSS...

Other ideas for hacking welcome - bring along a laptop if you want your own computing capability. Those who don't have their computer can "peer hack" with others who do! We can also assist people with questions they have about FOSS on their own computers. The key thing is the desire to learn, teach, and share!
