The Workshop is a one-day free event for makers, developers, robotic enthusiasts, and others to receive hands-on training of IoT protocols on hardware platforms. Field engineers from sponsor companies Arduino and Sierra Wireless will guide attendees step by step on how:
- To install an OMA Lightweight M2M(LwM2M) Client in one of their platforms,
- Open a connection with the OMA LwM2M Server
- And read and manipulate the sensor values exposed by the OMA LwM2M Client.
***IMPORTANT NOTE: Hardware platforms are limited and will only be distributed to the first 50 attendees to show up at the event. The platforms (boards) will need to be returned at the end of the event. Bring a government issued ID (ID, Drivers License, Passport) for us to hold during the event, it will be returned to you at the end of the event when you return the Board.
You will receive one of two platforms. The platforms (boards) that will be distributed are:
-
Sierra Wireless: Eclipse Wakaama client on the new http://mangoh.io hardware platform
-
Arduino: http://www.arduino.org/products/boards/4-arduino-boards/arduino-yun (http://www.arduino.org/products/boards/4-arduino-boards/arduino-yun)
Who Should Attend
- Makers
In the market there are several platforms that can host and support OMA LwM2M protocol. At the workshop you will learn how to install the software in one of these platforms, expose sensor information to a Server running in a sandbox and create your own set of sensors and values. - Developers
Eclipse Foundation is developing two LwM2M projects: Wakaama – C language and Leshan – Java. You can contribute and enhance these projects or construct your own applications and services around this protocol. - Robotic Enthusiasts
OMA LwM2M protocol can be used in a wide range of situations, where you need to expose sensor values to a cloud server. The protocol will allow you to establish the communication to read, write and execute functions in the Client.
About OMA LwM2M
Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) from the Open Mobile Alliance is fast becoming the global industry standard for M2M device management for the development of a fast, deployable, client-server specification to provide machine-to-machine service. The LwM2M Client is installed in a hardware platform and exposes sensor information to a remote LwM2M Server. OMA has also constructed an OMA LwM2M Developer Toolkit (https://github.com/OpenMobileAlliance/OMA-LwM2M-Public-Review/wiki) to assist developer and makers in understanding and using these specifications.
Use Case
A hardware platform called Hope Core has installed a LwM2M Client which exposes the values of the following sensors to a LwM2M Server: Temperature, Humidity, Microphone, Buttons, LEDs, GPIO
The Server can read and write the values exposed by these sensors

FAQs
Who is able to attend the Workshop?
This event is open to the public and anyone interested in attending may register. For example, Makers may be interested because you can build your own service using one of these platforms and extended by building your own set of sensors and values. Developers may be interested in attending because you can contribute and enhance such projects as Eclipse Foundation Leshan or Wakaama or construct your applications and services around this protocol.
I have registered, now what?
OMA staff still follow-up with event reminders and details in the days leading up to the event.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Self and valet parking are offered at the DoubleTree Hilton Mission Valley. Self parking is offered at a rate of $20 for all-day use. The DoubleTree Hilton Mission Valley is also located across the street from the San Diego trolley line at the Hazard Center stop along the Green Line.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, you do not. A list of registered attendees will be at check-in, please bring an ID, business card, or show an electronic copy of your confirmation to verify your registration.
