On William Camden's birthday in 1551, this walk to hikers' favourite Seven Sisters adopts a course from his chorography of this country Britannia:

"From Lewes, passing by a large lake well-fill'd with fish, near Furle, the seat of the Gages (who, advancing their estate by marriage with one of the heirs of the house of St. Clare, became a Family of good note) we come to Cuckmer, a pretty good Harbour. Then, having pass'd the promontory, call'd from the beach, Beachy."

The ancient town of Alfriston will have thrived in Camden's day. Perhaps he visited the 15th-C Star one of England's oldest inns with its magnificent carved woodwork. Look out also for the remains of the medieval market cross, and 14th-C Priests' House.

Then we'll enjoy Seven Sisters sights, and Birling Gap with its beach.

Two options for finishing: Inland from Birling Gap is East Dean from where a regular £3 bus will take you to Eastbourne - 14 miles. Or continue along the coast to Eastbourne is 18 miles for those wanting a longer walk.

16th-C antiquarian, writer and traveller for inspiration beats AI any day 😀

TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, INSURANCE
Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel and (if required) accommodation - this gives everyone the freedom and choice to join from wherever they want and stay wherever they want. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered.
We advise not to buy tickets until the day. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.
